Chromeo

OMG y’all…I’m not sure what is going on here. Seriously, I’m not myself today.

So I was watching MTV’s new show My Life as Liz..YES I was watching an MTV SHOW! WTF? However, this show is great. All about a little hipster girl trying to get through her senior year in Burleson, TX. Very cute and not bad like the other shows. ALSO it features some pretty decent music.

Which leads me to my next “What is going on” moment. In one episode they featured the Song Fancy Footwork by Chromeo.

It’s catchy, right?

So, on a whim I downloaded the whole Fancy Footwork album….ok…Chromeo is not something that I would think “Hmmm…I think I will like that” but I’m glad I gave it a shot.

This album is freaking hilarious. It almost sounds like a gag album but it’s NOT and it’s catchy as fuck. The lyrics are silly, just listen to Momma’s Boy.

But it’s catchy and fun and makes you want to dance a little.

So..my guilty pleasure pick for the week is Chromeo’s Fancy Footwork. Enjoy!

Where is my mind?

Wow, lots of stuff coming up.  Starting to feel a bit overwhelmed.  Ill be modeling some clothes at a friends opening of his new clothing line at Parts and Labor this Thursday.  Ill also be DJing that show.  After the show we’re hosting an after party with a photo shoot by Humming Bird Photography.  On top of that I feel a need to maintain this site, as well as my work sites.  Im DJing a dance party at Ruta Maya with Rob Hybrid on the 12th of March that I really should be getting ready for.   SXSW is fast approaching as well as Flipside which we really need to start buckling down on.  I guess its the winter weather (seriously, SNOW?), but i cant seem to concentrate on much for long.   Whats distracting you these days?

The Unloved Children of the Hype Machine -or- How I lost my Hearts

The franticly spinning gears of the Hype Machine turn out countless tracks each vying for our attention.  Some of them we fall in love with and collectively pluck  from the cold void of cyberspace to be  swaddled  in the warm embrace of our hard drives.   But for every track that makes it to our poolside playlist they’re are untold thousands that for whatever reason go unloved, unwanted, ground up in the gears of the machine and ejected into ambiguity.

While doting over our zeitgeist we noticed a few of these bastard children, in amongst the chosen.  Some with as few as one heart meaning that of all the people of the internet, we were the only ones who cared enough to say “hey little fellah, why not take a car ride with me, or keep me company at the gym.”  I want to introduce you to some of my favorite unloved and unwanteds.  The ones that I thought were special and knowing that I was one of the few that cared made them even more so.  Why not give them another chance to endear themselves to you?

This first one is a genuinely beautiful track from a one woman show, this song and indeed her entire album was recorded on a cheap digital recorder and mastered using shareware editing programs.

OK seriously, all kidding aside, I really really like this next track.  Please give it till the chorus before you make up your mind.  It has one heart, which I gave it.  Please tell me im not the only one that loves a good 80’s synth pop ballad with 70’s metal chorus accompaniment.

SXSW Initial Lineup

Hey, Let me show you something…Yeah, that long ass list down there, thats the initial line up.  It gets longer every damn day.  We dont even know what the hell to do with it.  We dont even know where those bands are gonna play yet.  One thing we will be doing is trying to stay on top of it, and by “we” I mean YOU.  Check out the new links on the right side of the screen.  Notice the link for “editors Choice ATX Shows”.  From now until south by is over ill be posting my choice for best shows.  Having a day job means I will defenitely not be able to post all the shows I WANT to see, so instead I will only post the shows that I am ACTUALLY going to see.  Where do you come in?  I want to know what shows your going to see.  If you want one of your own shiny buttons on the side of the page there send me an email jack.trades “at” internetdusted.com.  I will give you a log in and and your own section to post about all the shows your planning on attending.  Maybe together we can make sense of this whole wacky festival.

Baby Darling Doll Face Honey

Hello dusty interneters! I’m very excited to be contributing to Internet Dust. Just a little background here…
I used to love music but found myself forgetting to enjoy it. That has changed recently and I am absorbing myself into it again. I’ve never been able to play and I only sing badly to myself, but I love to hear it. I love the emotions it lets you feel. I like a whole range of stuff and no matter how bad the selection may be to some, to me, it gives me a feeling that I like. Yes, I still L-O-V-E Meatloaf’s I’d Do Anything For Love (but I won’t do that).  I’m not afraid to admit it. WHY? Because it was the first song that made me want to feel loved. I don’t give two shits that its a cheesy 12 minute song, I loved it for that reason and I still do.

I may not know what the kids are hip to these days, and I tend to be a little behind the trends since I am not plugged into iTunes 24/7. So please forgive if something that is a recent find to me, is old news to you. But maybe give it another chance. Sure you’ll have heard of a lot of the bands I mention before. That’s ok. Music doesn’t have to be about discovering that new hit first. It can be about appreciating it from a different light based on other people’s experiences. (Really, give Meatloaf another try). So that is what my blogs will offer you. Either a song or band you haven’t heard of because you’re way less cool than me, or a chance to listen to something from a new perspective.
Tons of bands and songs have been playing through my head lately and it was hard to narrow it down. I wanted to save this band for a little later but I can’t get them out of my head so I have to share. They made a splash on iTunes in 2009 but, as I said before, I’m not into iTunes much, so I’m just hearing about them. They are playing SXSW this year and I’m stoked.
The band is Band of Skulls. They are from London and you can tell. They have a very London rock look to them and I love it. I also love that they have a chick bassist. The bass always seemed to me the most masculine instrument in a band. So I love to see a girl rock it. Their album “Baby Darling Doll Face Honey” is bad ass. I love it. Listen to it. NOW
Of the whole album there are many great songs, but the one I cannot stop repeating is FIRES.
This whole album is great, I love it. But the song fires I can’t get enough of. It’s powerful and emotional and romantic and bad ass. It’s the kind of song that a guy should play for a girl. It’s the kind of song that makes you think of satin sheets and candle light but without the sappiness of typical mood music. It’s got rock and soul in it. It’s rich and deep and soft and loud. So, for my first ever blog entry I leave you with FIRES and hope you enjoy it at least an 1/8th as much as I do.

Larry Tee Tonight at the Beauty Bar ATX.

Holy Molly.  We didnt hear about Larry Tee until just about a year ago when he released that “I Love You” hard house electro whatever the hell track.  Weve had an audio crush on him since then but figured he was one of those east coast DJ’s that spent most of his time in British Clubs or Massive scenes.  But tonight, we will be seeing him a mer six blocks from our house.   RSVP to the party tonight and get a free track download.

If you dont know who this guy is, here is some well written background info we jacked from Posr.

Larry Tee hails from Atlanta, Georgia where he was friends with REM and his first group, the Fans, produced the B-52s’ first independent single “Rock Lobster/52 Girls.” He moved to NYC with fellow Atlantans RuPaul and Lady Bunny and quickly took over the NYC club scene with his epic party Love Machine. He started and named the infamous DISCO 2000 of Party Monster movie fame, DJ’ed the ROXY weekly, and co-wrote the Billboard Top 40 song Rupaul’s “Supermodel (You Better Work).” In 1997 Larry Tee got clean from drugs and alcohol and decided to re-examine his life and career. He turned to music for inspiration and championed a new sound and movement which became the Electroclash phenomenon. He created the term “Electroclash” for his festivals in 2001/2002 (it’s in the Oxford English Dictionary) which helped launch the careers of Scissor Sisters, Felix Da Housecat, 2 Many DJs/Soulwax, Peaches and many more.

Welcome Home Stitch Productions

What do we love most about Austin?  Thats a hard one, yeah we love the parties and the night life.  We love the parks and bike lanes too.  We love rock climbing on the greenbelt and swimming at Barton springs.  But the reason we love all these things are because of the people we share them with, our friends and our families.  This city is full of families and not just the atomic kind.  Often its not the families we were born with but the ones we choose in life that inspire us, rescue us, and remind us where home is.  These are families we spend our time or should spend our time trying our hardest to give back to.   Jessica Rue Wilson aka Stitch is the newest member of one those families, and Stitch Productions is how she plans to give back to it.

Stitch comes to us from her home town of Jackson, MS but she spent her more formative years living with musicians and attending UW-Milwaukee were she earned a Bachelors in creative writing.  Stitch, a self professed Audiophile, became a regular fixture at Atomic Records in Milwaukee were she is “…pretty sure a student loan or two was attributed to that stores survival.”

Stitch loved Milwaukee, but a flooded job market kept her from being able to find meaningful employment and just 5 months after graduation she was forced to return to Jackson, MS.  ”As soon as I moved back I began to suffer from panic attacks and severe migraines.”  ”I was miserable most of the time.”  Stitch fell in with a creative crowd in Jackson’s Fondren neighborhood and was beginning a career as a Communications and Marketing Coordinator.  ”I was moving up in the company fairly quickly, but it was still a constant battle to stay interested in my work.”

A friend from Milwaukee had been urging stitch to Move to Austin.  ”I’d been to Austin before and loved the city and people, but wasn’t convinced it was wise to leave my budding career in MS so soon.”   A couple of friends from Austin, Steve Paris and Chris Lundberg aka Kinetic Monkey kept working on her, trying to convince her to move to Austin.   Were guessing that Chris knew the nail in the Austin coffin would be getting Stitch to attend the Texas Regional Burning Man event; Burning Flipside.  He bought her Ticket and paid her camp dues [which she repaid].

Stitch spent the next 3 months driving back and forth from Jackson to Austin a 10+ our journey.   She quit her job, sold her furniture and moved in with her new family.  She managed to stretch 3k in savings through five months of unemployment, none of which would have been possible without the generosity of her friends.  Stitch was inspired by the community and began creating, she found she had a real talent for making costumes (which were guessing is where the nickname came from). “I wanted to show my excitement and enthusiasm for what the burners were inspiring in me.”

With that level of energy and enthusiasm it didnt take long for Stitch to ingrain herself into her new community.  It was then she started thinking about effecting change and how she could give back on a larger level.  What Stitch said she noticed about the Burn community was how “off the grid” it was, or out of the mainstream.  Burn events are often relegated to remote areas far outside of the major city limits, and the smaller events that occur within are usually house parties lovingly thrown together by fellow burners.  Stitch hopes to bring these events into the mainstream venues.  ”This will hopefully draw out never heard from DJs and fashion designers who will finally have the proper environment to freely express their creativity while doing so in a higher standard of production than I’ve seen at most venues. ”  In addition to high production expectations

The premiere show coming up this Friday the 12th and hosted by Prague will be a Clockwork Orange/Moloko Milk Bar theme.  The Moloko was the psychadelic milk bar featured in the opening scene of the film:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCFeMg26_wk&feature=related

Stitch loves the fashion in this film and felt that A Clockwork Orange theme was a good starting point or example of what it means to be Sub Glamorous.

This event is a variation of what will be a regularly produced event by Stitch Productions called Sub Glamour.  ”Sub Glamour will be a convergence of original and rarely heard electronic music and burner fashion.  I will hold a quarterly fashion show in place of the middle DJ set wherein local fashion designers can show their wares and bring their art to a wider audience.  The idea behind being sub glamourous comes from my experiences in Fondren where my friends and I continually challenged the standard of beauty and what being beautiful and glamourous really looked like.”

“I love this project! And I want it to always be a positive thing in the burn community. Even if it stresses me out to take care of some of the more  difficult aspects of event planning, I’m still much happier and feel more successful”

We love projects too, its the reason we started this little website and Jessica’s story inspires us.  We hope to keep looking for ways we can give back to our community, to the people who make Austin our home.  One way we can all do that is by showing our support for our families projects, attend their shows, buy their art or just encourage them to do what they do, and be who they are.  It all sounds pretty corny, I know, but there are people amongst us with big ideas, dreams and aspirations who just need the right environment to be successful.  It gives us a great sense of pride to be a part of a community that can provide that environment.  Welcome Home Stitch Productions.
